La Flèche wallonne 2022

On 20 April 2022, La Flèche Wallonne returned once again to its customary point of judgement: the Mur de Huy, where the race repeatedly narrows towards its decisive ascent. Few events in professional cycling are so compressed in form and so exact in structure. What matters here is not distance alone, but repetition, timing, and the progressive concentration of force upon a single slope. The race advances by returning, each time more sharply, to the place where effort turns into selection.

These photographs follow that contraction of space, attention, and energy. For a few hours, the ordinary settings of Huy were reorganised by the presence of the race: spectators waiting, barriers, fleeting apparitions of riders, and the charged atmosphere of a public ritual built around fatigue and ascent. What emerges is cycling in one of its starkest forms, where collective life gathers around a spectacle grounded not in glamour, but in labour, suffering, and resistance.
