Sicily and Calabria are extraordinary lands of deep contradictions: places shaped by emigration, demographic decline, cultural richness, abandonment, and marginalisation. This project approaches them through the idea of inhabited grounds: spaces that are lived in, altered, and sometimes abandoned, where human presence remains constitutive even through its absence. Rather than romanticising marginality or turning the South into picturesque scenery, the project gathers photographic fragments that preserve these tensions without forcing them into a predetermined narrative. Arranged alphabetically, they accumulate as pieces whose possible unity remains uncertain: perhaps a larger image will emerge, perhaps only the desire to find one.
