A city, an urban space regardless of its size, is made of fundamental elements: streets, buildings, doors, bridges. This small work in progress is a dissection of the urban fabric into some of these constituent parts. In this sense, the project loosely recalls the medieval theory of the elements. In Aristotelian natural philosophy, mixed bodies were understood as resulting from the mixture of four elements: fire, air, water, and earth. Yet the mixed body cannot be reduced to the simple sum of its components: a process of generation takes place. The mixed body is more than its elements, just as a city is more than its streets and buildings.

These photographic sequences are a study, by other means, of the urban space we inhabit, with its richness and its tensions. I have selected four main elements: Passages, Structures, Traces, and Alignments. This is a work in progress, like Hylonicum as a whole, which is a project, not a showcase.
