Urban Schematics

Structures

Structures are the minimal components of urban spaces. Separated and connected by streets and squares, buildings and houses constitute the very structure of cities, while themselves being structures endowed with precise yet fluid functions. Every city is what it is because of the ensemble of structures that compose it. At the same time, every structure is the result of the way in which the city conceives itself. Urban space emerges from this negotiation between the individuality of the building and the imagined representation of the urban community over time. Every building thus tells us how, at a particular moment, the city and its community understood themselves, merging representation and function into an apparently static moment that can never truly remain static. This sequence focuses on the transience of that apparent stability and on the forms through which time erodes it.
